LED Strip IP Ratings Explained: How to Choose IP20, IP65, IP67 or IP68 for Commercial Projects

Direct answer: An LED strip IP rating describes how an enclosure protects against access, solid foreign objects and water ingress under defined test conditions. The first digit addresses access and solid objects; the second addresses water. IP20, IP65, IP67 and IP68 are not simply four levels of “waterproofing.” They represent different protection conditions. A reliable commercial specification must consider the complete installation—including the strip or neon flex, connectors, cut ends, end caps, cable entries, mounting profile, driver, controller and junction points—because one unprotected interface can determine the practical protection of the assembled system.

What Does an IP Rating Mean for an LED Strip?

The IP Code is defined by IEC 60529, the international standard for degrees of protection provided by enclosures. It is a classification system, not a general statement that a product is suitable for every indoor, outdoor or underwater application.

The first digit: access and solid foreign objects

The first characteristic digit indicates the enclosure's protection against access to hazardous parts and the ingress of solid foreign objects. For example, the first digit in IP20 provides a defined level of protection against access and larger solid objects, while the first digit 6 in IP65, IP67 and IP68 represents the highest dust-ingress category in the two-digit IP system.

The second digit: water ingress

The second digit relates to harmful water ingress under a stated test. A zero does not claim water protection. The digits 5, 7 and 8 refer to different test conditions: water jets, temporary immersion, and continuous immersion under conditions agreed or specified for the product. These conditions are not interchangeable. An IP67 product is not automatically designed for permanent underwater use, and an IP68 statement is incomplete unless the relevant immersion conditions are known.

IP20 vs IP65 vs IP67 vs IP68 at a Glance

IP ratingTypical project evaluation and points to verify
IP20No water-protection claim. It may be considered for dry, protected interior locations where splashing, condensation and wet cleaning are not expected.
IP65Dust-tight and evaluated against water jets. It is not an immersion rating; connectors, cable entries and field-cut ends must also be verified.
IP67Dust-tight and evaluated for temporary immersion under defined conditions. It does not mean permanent underwater use, unlimited depth or unlimited duration.
IP68Dust-tight and evaluated for continuous immersion under conditions specified or agreed for the product. Confirm the tested depth, duration, medium, temperature, termination method and complete assembled system.

This table is a selection aid, not a declaration that every product with a given label is suitable for the same installation. Buyers should compare the actual construction and documents of the selected model. Leomay's LED strip product options should therefore be reviewed by model and application rather than by IP code alone.

Why the Complete Installation Determines the Real Protection Level

A protected strip body does not automatically create a protected lighting system. Water can enter at interfaces that are outside the tested or sealed portion. In practice, the protection of an assembly can be limited by its least-protected component or by field workmanship.

Connectors, end caps and cable entries

Every transition is a potential entry path. A connector may have a different environmental suitability from the strip. End caps and cable glands must match the product geometry and intended exposure. Cable direction also matters because water can track along a cable or collect at a low point.

Cut ends and field assembly

Cutting a factory-finished strip or neon flex can expose conductors and change the condition represented by the original product. The field termination method, compatible sealing materials, cure process and workmanship must be defined. A rating for an uncut sample should not be transferred automatically to a field-cut assembly.

Power supplies, controllers and junction points

The driver and controller require their own suitability review. A protected LED strip cannot compensate for a driver installed in an unsuitable location or for an exposed junction. The electrical design must also account for load, current, cable resistance and distribution. See the LED strip voltage drop and power supply sizing guide for the electrical planning steps.

Aluminum profiles do not automatically create an IP-rated system

An aluminum profile can support mounting, heat transfer, alignment and diffusion, but it should not be assumed to create a particular IP rating unless the complete profile assembly has been evaluated for that claim. Covers, end caps, joints and mounting penetrations can all affect the installed result.

Choosing by Application and Exposure

Dry interior joinery and display lighting

For protected cabinets, shelves and interior displays, an IP20 option may be appropriate when water, condensation and wet cleaning are excluded. The buyer should still confirm touch access, ventilation, mounting surface, driver location and local electrical requirements.

Humidity, splashing and cleaning

Kitchens, bathrooms, bars, retail food displays and cleaning zones cannot be selected from the room name alone. Determine whether the lighting will experience humidity only, direct splashes, water jets, detergents or condensation. The installation location and the exposure of connectors may be more important than the nominal rating of the strip body.

Outdoor façades, signage and landscape details

Outdoor does not describe one environment. Rain exposure, drainage, solar radiation, temperature cycling, salt, pollution, chemicals, standing water and mechanical movement may all be relevant. IEC 60529 addresses ingress protection, but it does not by itself establish resistance to corrosion, ultraviolet exposure, icing or every other outdoor influence.

Ground-level and immersion-risk applications

If water can accumulate around the lighting, define the expected exposure instead of requesting “waterproof” product generically. Temporary flooding and continuous immersion are different design cases. The project team should confirm the full assembly, specified test conditions, installation instructions, drainage and maintenance access before selection.

LED Strip or Silicone Neon Flex?

IP rating alone does not decide whether an LED strip or silicone neon flex is the better form factor. LED strip may suit protected linear details or installations inside a compatible profile. Silicone neon flex may be considered when a continuous luminous surface, defined bend direction or integrated diffuser geometry is required.

For neon flex, buyers must also confirm profile dimensions, light-emitting direction, bending direction, minimum bending radius, cutting unit, cable entry and termination method. Review Leomay's silicone neon flex options and the top-bend vs side-bend neon flex guide. Do not bend a product against its designed axis or assume that a sealed-looking diffuser permits any radius or exposure.

Europe and North America: IP, NEMA and Location Terms Are Not Equivalent

Global buyers often receive specifications that mix IEC IP codes, NEMA enclosure Types and North American dry, damp or wet-location terminology. They should not be treated as interchangeable labels.

The IP Code focuses on access, solid foreign objects and water ingress. NEMA enclosure Types can include additional environmental considerations, and NEMA explains that an IP degree cannot simply be declared equivalent to a NEMA Type. Likewise, a particular IP code does not by itself prove that an LED strip, driver or complete luminaire is evaluated or marked for a North American damp or wet location.

For European projects, an IP code also does not replace the conformity assessment, documentation and installation requirements applicable to the finished product and project. For North American projects, confirm the required product category, location suitability, power-supply arrangement and installation conditions. Documentation availability must be confirmed for the selected model and target market.

B2B Procurement Checklist Before Quotation or Sampling

Provide the following information so the manufacturer can review a relevant construction instead of guessing from the word “outdoor”:

  • Application and installation drawing or site photo

  • Indoor or outdoor location and expected water exposure

  • Whether cleaning agents, salt, UV, condensation or standing water are present

  • Available installation dimensions and mounting method

  • LED strip or neon flex preference, including bend direction where relevant

  • Voltage, power constraints and circuit layout

  • Color or CCT, CRI and required light output

  • Dimming or control method

  • Required cut length, cable entry and connection method

  • Quantity range, target market and required documentation

How to Validate a Representative Assembly

A useful sample review should represent the intended installation, not only a loose length of strip. Include the actual connectors, end caps, cable entries, mounting channel, adhesives or clips, driver arrangement and field joints. Check whether the sample instructions match the way installers will cut, terminate and mount the product.

Validation conditions should come from the applicable product requirements, project specification, target market and documented product claim. There is no responsible universal test depth, duration or maximum run length for every LED strip installation. Record the selected configuration so the quotation, sample and production specification refer to the same assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IP65 LED strip waterproof?

Not in the broad sense. IP65 addresses dust ingress and water jets under defined test conditions, but it is not an immersion rating. The connectors, cut ends, cable entries, driver and installed orientation must also be suitable for the expected exposure.

Can IP67 LED strip be installed permanently underwater?

No conclusion of permanent underwater suitability should be made from IP67 alone. IP67 relates to temporary immersion under defined conditions. A permanent immersion project requires a product and complete assembly evaluated for the specified conditions.

What is the difference between IP67 and IP68 LED strip?

They address different immersion conditions. IP67 covers temporary immersion under its defined test, while IP68 covers continuous immersion under conditions specified for the product. For IP68, confirm the stated depth, duration, medium, temperature and termination method.

Is IP20 suitable for kitchens or bathrooms?

Only if the actual position is dry and protected from water exposure. A room label is not enough. Review splash zones, condensation, cleaning methods, touch access and the requirements applying to the complete installation.

Does an aluminum profile increase the IP rating?

Not automatically. A profile can improve mounting, heat transfer and diffusion, but a particular IP claim requires evaluation of the complete profile assembly, including its cover, joints, end caps and penetrations.

Does cutting an LED strip affect its ingress protection?

It can. Cutting may open a protected enclosure and expose conductors. The cut end must be terminated using the compatible method and materials specified for that product, and the finished assembly should be validated for the intended exposure.

Is an IP rating the same as a wet-location or NEMA rating?

No. IP, NEMA enclosure Types and dry/damp/wet-location designations come from different systems and cannot be treated as interchangeable. Confirm the exact product evaluation, markings and documents required in the destination market.

What information should I send for an outdoor LED strip or neon flex quotation?

Send the application, exposure and complete installation details. Include drawings or photos, dimensions, voltage, color or CCT, CRI, control method, cut length, cable entry, connectors, quantity range, target market and required documentation. This allows the selected model and assembly to be reviewed without assuming that one IP code answers every requirement.

Plan the Complete System, Not Only the Strip

The right IP selection begins with the real exposure and ends with a verified assembly. Define where water can reach the installation, identify every interface, separate ingress protection from other environmental and regulatory requirements, and compare samples in the intended configuration.

Planning an LED strip or silicone neon flex project? Send Leomay the application, exposure conditions, installation drawing, dimensions, voltage, color or CCT, CRI, control method, cut length, cable-entry direction, quantity range, target market and required documentation. The relevant product options and documentation availability can then be reviewed for the selected model and project.

Technical reference note: IEC 60529 defines the IP Code. NEMA guidance explains why IP degrees and NEMA enclosure Types are not directly equivalent. Project teams should consult the applicable standards, product documentation and local requirements for the finished installation.
